M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening

Bees are disappearing. Did you know that? This is a fascinating real life mystery and a great jumping off point for a film.

I love M. Night Shyamalan. Even though I am really not sure that I am even coming close to pronouncing his name correctly. So, even though we had seen all bad reviews, we went to see it yesterday afternoon. I loved it. It was scary, tense and the acting was superb. Now, I did call the "secret" 10 minutes into the movie, but it didn't ruin anything. Zooey Deschanel is one of my favorite actresses right now. I think she's cool. My mom got me her CD for my birthday. Its really good. So, the premise is that something is happening. (shocked?) In central park, everyone suddenly stops, like freeze frame. They begin moving erratically and eventually kill themselves in a variety of manners. Construction workers throw themselves off buildings, policemen shoot themselves, and more gruesome methods are used by others. Mark Wahlberg is a teacher and he decides to get away. He takes his wife and they go with John Leguizamo but get stopped on the way. I won't get any further into it, because I don't want to ruin the atmosphere.

As I said, I really loved it. It's the kind of scary that I can really get into. Not there's a monster somewhere, look at it, but maybe there's a monster and maybe it's just us. Also, I was pleased to see Frank Collison who was PERFECT as the nursery owner. He was perfectly creepy, smart, weird and kind at the same time. I think everyone who liked any of Shyamalan's previous films should go see this. It was well worth it.

Random Honeymoom videos

Here's 2 I didn't fit in anywhere else.

Honeymoon Days 12, 13, and 14 The End...

We spent the rest of the honeymoon doing whatever seemed attractive at the moment. We went to several beaches. This one you could see a really neat bridge in the distance, and it was extremely windy that day.

This one was kind of a double beach. There was a little lake kinda thing in the beach. The bottom was all squishy and gross, I don't recommend crossing like we did. eew.

We saw some wildlife, including this very skinny squirrel. I guess they don't have to fatten up for winter in Florida. He was really cute.
Unlike this bird which was the ugliest thing we had ever seen, and it was huge. It's head was all gross looking and didn't have any feathers. It had stolen a hot dog from a hot grill. Hmmm. Maybe it wasn't born that way. We saw some people flying giant kites that looked like they would take you off the ground but somehow didn't. If anyone out there knows anything about these, let me know, I'm curious.
We went to see another movie, this time in St Pete. The theater was really beautiful, it was all done up like an elaborate train station. Prettier than the stuff here, believe me. Also, brilliantly, they had a child care center in the theater. We saw vantage point and it was really good! That night we went to Cody's Road House. I have never had less flavorful food in my entire life. Even the jalapenos were bland. How do you do that? The only good thing that came out of that place was this:

The amazing stink egg. You will see that he is an egg with feet, wings and a top hat. He is also apparently a member of the x-men. He was a collaborative art project. It was too soon time to go home. We left in the morning this time and drove all day and night . We got home late because we stopped at a few places. For instance, They don't sell peaches at this place. It was just a strip mall.
The road home was at least pretty.
We had a really great time, and will remember it for the rest of our lives. I can't say any more than that.

Wii Fit

You all know that we are wii lovers! I was stumbling, and I came across a video about the wii fit and I have to say, I watched it all, but not for the same reason that others seem to be. It was a girl in her underwear and a t-shirt (this is normal wii-drobe, at least for most od us, admit it. I've shot lots of zombies in my pjs.) doing a hula hoop wii fit minigame. I watched it because I wanted to see what the game was like and it looked like fun. Apparently, however, the person in the video has a doppelganger, same name, similar appearance, and she wasn't looking for this kind of reputation. And, get this, she's one of us! A librarian. My personal plan if this happened to me would be to emphasize the growing number of libraries doing wii programming and the enlarged patron base that she could draw from after this internet fame. Okay, I probably wouldn't be brave enough to say that either. I hope it all works out, and we need more with it teen librarians here in Indiana, come on over! The original article is worth a read and here:

Would You Rather Weekend!

Have a beautiful house and ugly car or an ugly house and beautiful car?

I thought this one was pretty appropriate considering the mortgage crisis and the way the economy looks lately. I guess I'd rather have a beautiful house, because that's where I have to live. Plus, if I had a beautiful house, it would have a garage and I could hide an ugly car. Right now I have a cute car and a cute house, but we are renting, and it is, I have to say, small. Jason and I would like to buy someday, but the news make me nervous. What do you guys think?

Cabin!

This weekend we are going to a cabin! There's a lake right in front and all kinds of really nice amenities. So, I'll post some stuff about it when we get back including our pictures.

It's still wet here in Indiana, it's actually raining right now, ugh. We're still good, but lots of people still aren't. FEMA is here. We're trying hard at the library to help people however we can.

Check back later today for an early version of Would you Rather?

Indiana Flooding Videos

So, if you have looked at the previous post here, you will know that we've had some pretty severe flooding here this past weekend. Jason and I were fine, but we took some video of some of it. Here it is.

Indiana Flooding

In case you haven't seen the news yet, there is flooding here in Indiana, and especially here in Johnson County. I hope my work isn't underwater. It rained for 12 hours straight here and we got 11 inches of rain in those hours. Jason and I hadn't thought much of it until Larson called us and told us that there was someone kayaking in the street about a block from our place. We piled in the fit and went to look. Sure enough...

They had brought kayaks over from dick's sporting goods. Eventually the police came and told them to leave, but I have no idea why. No fair!

That morning, this was our yard:
What's that in the vegetable garden? A floating radish?
Hmm?
WHAT?

The roads were blocked in a lot of places, but the cats needed food. We made it to the pet store and then made it to some food for us and headed home ad saw all this:

So, the water is really high around here. There's a dam in a heavily residential area near here that has broken. So far, no one has been hurt, but there's a lot of people without power and many people in shelters. We're okay here so far, but there was a LOT of water in the backyard this morning, and some in the ducts in the house, so we'll see how that turns out. Everyone here in the southern central Indiana area needs some help right about now.

Would You Rather Weekend

Would You Rather lie motionless on your back while a fruit bat licks fruit jelly off your face, or while a vulture eats road kill off your stomach?

I would have to go with the fruit bat on this one. I know they have teeth but vultures look so violent when they eat, and fruit jelly is sticky, but road kill is dead. I think a small furry bat would be better than a big pointy vulture. What do you guys think? Let me know!!!!!!

Honeymoon day 11 The Sponge Docks

We had been told that there was a place near where we were staying that was a must visit. It was the sponge docks. Yeah, for sponges that are grown under the ocean! We didn't know where it was, so we drove forever until we got to a AAA. They then informed us that it was about 3 minutes away from the house in the other direction. So, we arrive to see a million people waving flags (okay, like 4) for parking. We drive through and decide that the best parking is right at the front. We park and go!
The whole area is a street lined with shops on one side and shops and docks on the other. The shops had all kinds of cool stuff. The sponging business was mostly run by Greek immigrants, and so there was quite a Greek flair to everything there. The shops sold Greek clothing, handmade soaps and lotions, cool shells and strangely, fisher price toys that speak Greek. We went into the first shop and there were a TON of really cool sponges. There was also a lady selling boat tours. It sounded interesting, so we took a flier. We went and signed up and it was worth it. We toured the shops, looked at all kinds of interesting stuff and then it was time for the nature tour. We and a few other people got onto a pontoon kind of boat and the tour guide told us all about the history of the area, then took us into a bird sanctuary, and an island. We saw all kinds of cool stuff. We saw diving birds, bald eagles, all kinds of fish, dolphins, and just all around coolness. The guide was really knowledgeable, and it was really great. We came back and went shopping for real. I bought a bunch of sponges, Jason got two loooong loofahs, we got some other odds and ends and then last but certainly not least, we got some awesome soap. It's honeysuckle scented and has a little sponge embedded in it. It is really awesome. Oh! Also there was a whole shop filled with hot sauces. Jason got a bunch to complement the collection he had been building. Remind me to post on that later.

At the end of the street was an aquarium. We decided to go in. At the beginning was a talk for you to touch urchins, and starfish. Those were neat. Then there was a HUGE tank full of all kinds of native fish including sharks. I was worried when we went in that it would be poorly kept and grubby, but it was the opposite. The fish were all really healthy and the place was really nice. The employees were extremely knowledgeable. After the huge tank there was a stingray and shark petting tank.

That was really cool too. Even Jason petted stingrays and a shark. The shark's skin was really rough. The rays all had their stingers removed, and the guy had some to show us, but said they could grow back at any time, so there was still a little danger, but rays aren't aggressive. We fed them shrimp. You could hold the shrimp on your hand underwater and they would come suck it off. The next tank also had sharks, but not the petting kind. You could feed them, but had to put the shrimp on the end of knitting needles. It was scary! There were a lot of working boats there. We thought these were derelict, but they were working shrimp boats:

We were tired then, so we went to dinner and it started raining. Pouring really. We decided to go to a movie. We run through the pouring rain and see signs everywhere that say that the power "might" go out, because of the storm. We think they are sissies and go watch Superhero movie. It was funny, but obviously not too memorable as I just had to ask Jason what we saw.

We got back to the house and dried off. EEK!
